Rowing Center

A Message from the Campaign Co-Chairs

We would like to share with you the progress of the Rowing Center Campaign. While it has been a long but very rewarding process, the final design is extraordinary and will do so much for McCallie, GPS, and Chattanooga.

At the spring McCallie Board of Trustees meeting, we presented the impact this investment will have not only for the Crew Program, but also for the school as a whole in attracting future students and families. The Board requested we delve deeper to insure all costs were prudent and efficient before beginning construction. We eagerly responded.

In our research and discussions with those very familiar with the sport of rowing, we learned that rowing tanks were an unnecessary burden for schools that have the ease of access to a body of water and a climate conducive to rowing nine months of the year.  The location of the new facility on the GPS location and Chattanooga’s climate meet both these criteria. We also decided to address what parts of the Rowing Center was most urgent for both programs and leave room for future innovations as needed.

We are excited to announce the project is now underway. A brand-new boat dock was installed over the summer and is ready for the 2019 season. The groundbreaking will occur in early September, and we remain on target to have a grand opening at the 2020 Head of the Hooch. This facility promises to show case our world-class rowing programs and be a transformative structure we as donors will be proud to call McCallie’s.

Bottom line, our work in raising funds is ready to wrap up. If you have made your pledge, thank you. If not, please make your gift/commitment now so we can wrap up our fundraising efforts and stay on schedule to begin construction by early September. Should you have any further questions, please contact Bess Steverson at or by phone at (423) 493-5837.

We look forward to celebrating our success together at the Head of the Hooch 2020.
