Boys learn best when they are immersed in a real situation that demands their attention.
The Outdoor Program offers extended expeditions to exotic places that would not be feasible during the regular school year. These trips combine exciting aspects of outdoor recreation with hands-on learning opportunities. Leadership skills such as communication, initiative, problem solving and judgment are taught and practiced in conjunction with the group process skills. In addition, there is a strong underpinning of respect and stewardship for the wild places in which we travel.
During Tornado Term, the McCallie School offers a backpacking trip on the Appalachian trail
. Over the past 20 years this trip has become a right of passage for many young backpackers. We pick a section of the southern end of the Appalachian Trail each year and split into several small groups to head into the mountains. The weather and terrain provide a big challenge, but the food, scenery and good company always make up for any hardship. A similar trip is offered to teh Middle School over the Winterim Break.
