The Hard Work of Creating

Boys learn by doing, creating, shaping. At McCallie boys weld, throw pots, paint, draw, and photograph. After exposing students to the basics in skills and ideas, McCallie boys have a wide variety of opportunities to follow their artistic passions.

The art department faculty works with boys from all ranges of ability, beginning at the most basic level and on the most basic artistic fundamentals, and growing with the boys at their pace, opening their eyes to new media and new means of creative expression.

McCallie offers 17 courses in the fine arts, including AP Studio Art in both 2-D and 3-D. These courses incorporate almost every artistic medium imaginable, from drawing and painting to sculpture, pottery, photography and advanced design. In addition, there is a thriving Art Club involved in regular school projects and a new faculty-led Video Club that began in 2015.

Arts At McCallie

Fine arts -- music, art, drama -- comprises a critical element in the journey to becoming a McCallie Man. Academically, students are required to take five semesters' worth of fine arts classes and can choose from more than 20 classes and subjects. But the school's commitment to the arts hardly begins and ends in the classroom setting.

Interest in the arts can develop through involvement in choral or instrumental groups, a diverse offering of art classes from pottery and painting to sculpture, or through a comprehensive drama program.
