Honors Scholarship

Character & Integrity

Character and integrity are special words at McCallie. As such, we find it fitting to award scholarships to entering 9th and 10th grade boarders who possess the remarkable qualities of strong character, personal integrity, leadership potential and academic excellence.

Since its inception, the Honors Scholarship Program has awarded over 150 merit scholarships to deserving young men. Scholarships are made possible by a special $12 million dollar endowment. To discover more about this option of financing your McCallie education, please read the information below.

A Prestigious Tradition

The McCallie Honors Scholarship brings to secondary education the prestigious merit-based scholarship traditions that have graced our finest universities. The Morehead Scholarship at the University of North Carolina, the Jefferson Scholarship at the University of Virginia, and the A.B. Duke Scholarship at Duke University -- all attract the most exceptional students from around the country to the Southeast. These outstanding students enrich the universities they attend, helping ensure the continuity of excellence within these schools. In the same way, the McCallie Honors Scholars enhance McCallie's tradition of excellence.

A McCallie Honors Scholar will be an outstanding young man in several respects. His academic excellence will be demonstrated through both his academic record as well as his standardized test scores. He will exhibit exceptional leadership potential. And he will possess truly extraordinary character. Scholarship, leadership, and integrity -- these are the defining characteristics of the McCallie Honors Scholar.
Down to Details

In recent years, an average of 100 boys have been nominated annually for Honors Scholarships. All are required to visit campus during a Visitor's Day program or for an individually scheduled visit, during which they meet current McCallie students and staff, tour campus, and complete an admission interview. From the group of nominees, selected Honors Scholars will receive scholarships ranging in value from partial tuition to full tuition, room and board. We encourage you to review our selection criteria before applying.

SELECTION CRITERIA

To be eligible for scholarship consideration, a boy must
  • be currently enrolled in eighth or ninth grade in the United States,
  • be nominated by an adult outside his family (i.e. a current or former teacher, school principal or guidance counselor, minister or scoutmaster, or a McCallie alumnus),
  • submit a complete application for boarding admission, and complete an on-campus interview.
In recent years, an average of 100 nominees have competed annually for full and partial merit scholarships, some qualifying for additional need-based financial aid. The most competitive nominees have met or exceeded the following standards:
  • Extraordinary character. Recommendations from teachers, school administrators, and community leaders should reflect the nominee’s superior character. Personal interviews conducted on campus during the admission process will also give the nominee an opportunity to reflect on issues of character and the ideals embodied in the McCallie Honor Code.
  • Demonstrated leadership. By presenting an outstanding record of participation in activities such as school or club athletics, fine and performing arts, debate, student government, scouting, church or civic activities, or community service, nominees have the opportunity to display their potential to be outstanding campus leaders at McCallie.
  • Academic excellence. Successful nominees demonstrate outstanding academic achievement by earning a strong grade point average throughout a challenging middle school curriculum and posting standardized test scores commensurate with their ability. They often rank in the top ten percent of their classes, maintain a cumulative grade point average at or above 3.5, and score in the top 15 percent of independent school norms on the SSAT.
