U.S. Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) speaks to Upper School students during a special assembly in the Chapel at McCallie School.

McCallie’s student body were given a chance to interact with one of our nation’s leaders Friday, Nov. 30, when Sen. Bob Corker visited campus and spoke to the Upper and Middle schools students to discuss his time representing the state of Tennessee in the United States Senate.

Sen. Corker is finishing his second term in the Senate and will end time in January after announcing last year that he would not seek reelection for a third term.

Prior to his time in Washington, D.C., Sen. Corker was a businessman in Chattanooga and previously served as Mayor of Chattanooga and as commissioner of finance for the state of Tennessee.

Sen. Corker began his day on the Ridge speaking to members of the media before speaking to the Upper School student body in a special Chapel presentation. After brief remarks to the students, Sen. Corker took questions from students on subjects such as U.S. relations with Saudi Arabia, immigration policy, partisanship in America, climate change and the opioid crisis.

“These students have a lot in common with the national press corps I face in Washington,” Sen. Corker said of the thoughtful and challenging questions asked by McCallie students.

Following his time with the Upper School, Sen. Corker spoke to the Middle School students in McDonald Hall, also taking time to answer questions about his experience in the Senate and the qualities needed to be an effective leader.

Sen. Corker’s visit was featured on the front of the Chattanooga Times Free Press and on television news coverage by WTVC, WRCB and WDEF. A photo gallery of Sen. Corker's visit can be seen on online.

McCallie is proud to bring a wide variety of leaders to campus to help students learn and prepare to become business and community leaders in the future.
