McCallie Once Again Dominates NHD Regional Competition
National History Day 2026

If it’s February, it’s time for another massive McCallie awards haul in the National History Day (NHD) Tennessee Southeast regional competition. Students compete in one of nine possible categories with historical research projects. There is a regional, then state, and a national level of competition. Each year there is a theme, and this year’s theme is "Revolution, Reaction, and Reform in History." The first and second place finishers advance to the state competition in Nashville on April 18.

As McCallie history chair Duke Richey said of the competitors, “These young men spend months working on these projects.”

Once again, the quality and creativity of that work showed in the awards, with McCallie not only sweeping 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the paper category as it has done for the last 14 years, but also sending 14 students on to the state competition in Nashville on April 18.

Richey also pointed out in a weekend email, “This was an exciting year at NHD regionals because some students from Randy Odle’s AP World History course also competed, and for the first time in many years, some middle school students Randy has been working with also competed. The middle school boys had great success and we look forward to even more 6th-8th grade participation in the future.”
