Student Health Services

• Parents are required to complete their son’s medical information in the Magnus Student Medical Record system by July 16.

• Student athletes must have physicals and forms completed by July 16 in order to participate in any organized team activities for the summer.

• All students must have physicals and forms completed in order to attend classes which begin on August 17.

• Magnus Health is a leading provider of web based student medical records (SMR) whose primary focus is “streamlining the collection and secure storage of student health information.”  Magnus is in compliance with HIPPA, FERPA, and state regulations. • McCallie School follows the State of Tennessee vaccine requirements for school attendance, including Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Polio, Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella and COVID-19.

• All parents must present proof of their son’s vaccination status by uploading his immunization record into Magnus.

• The seasonal flu vaccine will be available on campus in the fall. This vaccine is strongly recommended for day students and is required for boarding students. A signed permission form is necessary in order for your son to receive a flu vaccine; the permission form can be found in your Magnus account. This vaccine may be charged to your son's Student Account.

• The meningococcal vaccine is strongly recommended for day students and will be required for boarding students. This vaccine will not be given on campus.

• Domestic boarding students must submit a vaccine record to Magnus from their home state prior to arriving on campus (unless an approved record is already stored in Magnus.)

• International boarding students must submit an English translation of their vaccinations to Magnus prior to arriving on campus (unless an approved record is already stored in Magnus.)

Because students living in close quarters are at high risk for spreading the influenza virus, the seasonal flu vaccine will be given to all boarding students unless a parent requests otherwise.  We will administer this vaccine by dorms in the fall. Please sign the permission form found in Magnus. Please notify the director of Student Health Services if you do you not want your son vaccinated at school. Your son's student account may be charged for this vaccine. 
 

Required for the 2022-23 school year:

The Meningococcal vaccine will be required of all boarding students. It will be the responsibility of the parent to have their son vaccinated prior to arriving at school in August of 2022.  The vaccine will not be given on campus. Click here for information about the vaccine and the disease.

Health Center nurses are here to assist day students who experience illness or injury during the school day. A supply of over-the-counter medications are available if needed to ease the symptoms of seasonal allergies, coughs and colds, GI upset, headache, etc. If there are any over-the-counter medicines that should not be dispensed to your son, please note those restrictions in Magnus. Nurses are also available to administer prescription medication  to day students. A Physician Prescription Medication form is available and should be uploaded in Magnus.

• Off-Campus Appointments: For boarding students needing off-campus appointments such as orthodontics, dermatology, or orthopedics, the Health Center staff is available to schedule these appointments and arrange transportation. Students should always sign in and out of the Health Center for off campus appointments, especially if they are driving themselves.

• Acute Care: Dr. Jack McCallie, MD, '75., a local internal medicine physician, serves as our school physician.  Dr. McCallie sets aside appointment times during the school day to see boarding students who are acutely ill and in need of a physician. His office is located near the McCallie campus, and transportation is provided to and from the appointment.  

• Pharmacy Support:  The Health Center enjoys a close working relationship with Access Family Pharmacy, a local neighborhood pharmacy. Access fills prescriptions written during a student’s visit with local practitioners and can also fill/refill maintenance prescriptions written by your son’s home physician. Prescriptions filled at Access are delivered to the Health Center.

• Allergy shots: The Health Center is available to support your boarding student’s allergen immunotherapy. We can begin administering allergy shots once we receive your son's allergy serum and orders from the home allergist. Two nurses must be present in order for a student to receive an allergy shot at any particular time. In addition, the student must plan to stay for 30 minutes of monitoring after receiving the injections. The first dose from any new bottle must be given in a physician’s office.

• Emergency Care: The Erlanger Health System is a multi-hospital system with five hospitals based in Chattanooga, including The Children’s Hospital and Erlanger North Hospital. The Children’s Hospital (located downtown on the main Erlanger campus) provides immediate, 24-hour-a-day care for critically ill or injured children. Erlanger North (located in nearby Red Bank) is used for non-trauma emergencies and after hours urgent issues.
