Blue Tornado Swimming & Diving
The swimming program is on a roll, winning its fourth State Championship since 2019 last year and its 23rd overall. Swimming and diving has the most state titles of any program at the school and shows no signs of letting up at present under Head Coach Stan Corcoran.
Senior Marvin Johnson, ranked the No. 6 swimmer in the nation, set state records in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races at the 2024 state meet. The 200-meter freestyle relay team (Benton Grutter, Chandler Neill, Tristan Hepburn, Johnson) also set a state record. Collin Holgerson and Ryan Berry set school records in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke respectively, as did the 400 freestyle relay team (Neill, Ben Bevill, George Goins, Johnson). The Blue Tornado beat Baylor in its annual head-to-head matchup for the third straight year and crushed them in the final state meet point totals, 397.5-258.5.
McCallie won back-to-back state titles in 2019 and 2020, were state runners-up in 2021 and brought home the state championship trophy in 2022.
Nearly 50 swimmers who have trained under Coach Corcoran have gone on to compete at the collegiate level. Perhaps his most notable student-athlete is alumnus Sean Ryan '10, a State Champion who continued his career at the University of Michigan, won Big 10 Conference titles and competed internationally. In August 2016, Sean competed in the 10k Open Water event at the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as a member of Team USA. Sean returned to McCallie to work with the high school program for three years.
