Blue Tornado Golf

McCallie's golfers use several top-notch and highly-rated area courses for practices and tournaments, and the schedule takes the boys to some of the best tracks in the state. The school’s indoor on-campus golf center, complete with a Trackman indoor golf simulator, offers an excellent opportunity for boys to work on all aspects of their games—players from the varsity to the middle school level benefit from the training facility.

The 2024 golf team produced one of its strongest seasons in recent years, winning the Region title for the first time since 2018. The Region crown qualified the Blue Tornado for the state tournament for the seventh consecutive year. Senior Billy Boroughs finished third individually at the State Championships in Sevierville and led McCallie to a third-place team finish. Billy and fellow senior Jack Martin tied for the individual Region title with Jack winning on a two-hole playoff.

Under Head Coach Rob Riddle, the golfers also won the Tennessee Preview in August, were runners up at the Best of Preps Area Tournament, and defeated Baylor in the annual match play event at Black Creek Golf Club by the largest margin in history, 10.5-1.5.

The Blue Tornado have three TSSAA state golf championships, winning the title in 2002 and earning back-to-back state crowns in 2010 and 2011. Patrick Clossin ’11 earned the 2010 individual state title, the first in the program’s history. Clossin went on to have a stellar golf career at Washington & Lee University. Gordon Hulgan '14 was the state individual medalist in 2011.

Under the steady leadership of Coach Riddle, the golfers have qualified for the TSSAA Division II State Tournament in each of the past eight years and have won Region titles in 2017, 2018 and 2024. Coach Riddle has led the program since 2015 and has more than 25 years of experience in the golf industry and teaching the sport.

Aside from Clossin, other golfing alumni have continued their careers at schools such as Belmont, Georgia, Lee, Middle Tennessee State, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech. Andrew Weathers ’14 was a starter on the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga squad and was selected the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year in 2015.

Adam Mitchell ’05 was named a 2008 Second-Team All-America at the University of Georgia by PING and the Golf Coaches Association of America. He was a 2009 Walker Cup championship team member and turned professional in 2009. Bryce Ledford ’03, who had a decorated golf career at UTC, turned pro in 2008. He won the 2009 Tennessee Open and competed on the Hooters Tour.
