We are excited about the options for summer reading this year. We hope everyone will find the school-wide book inspiring. It is an unusual choice in that it is not a narrative. Instead, we have chosen a book that is full of encouraging ideas on how to reframe the challenges and stresses we face. We feel this is a vital process for us all to consider in today’s hectic world.
All 9th graders and any 10th-12th students who are new to McCallie will enjoy a must-read classic in their second required read. Returning 10th-12th students have an amazing array of books and experiences from which to choose as their second requirement.
REQUIRED BOOK FOR ALL STUDENTS: On Fire by John O’Leary (ISBN: 978-1501117725)
At the age of nine, the author accidently blows up his house, resulting in severe burns on 100% of his body. His path to recovery involves a number of remarkable individuals and realizations about how to live a “radically inspired life.” His insights provide uplifting encouragement and valuable perspective and will stir deep reflection within any reader. This book will be discussed school-wide on a day in August, 2018, but we expect it to reappear in discussions throughout the year.
- All Students NEW to the Upper School (all 9th graders, new 10th-12th graders): You will read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. See the link below.
- All returning Upper School students (10th-12th): You will choose a book group from the options provided in the brochure (PDF) linked from this page.
We will discuss these additional books on a second day in August, 2018.
