Crew Wins State Rowing Championship
McCallie School won the 2011 Tennessee State Rowing Championship in Oak Ridge this past weekend, taking the top spot in the Men’s Varsity 8, Men’s Second Varsity 8, and Men’s Second Varsity 4. McCallie’s Novice 8 also raced well, taking 2nd place, while the McCallie Lightweight Double earned a bronze medal by taking the third spot in its event.
In both the Varsity 8 race and the Second Varsity 8 race, McCallie faced stiff challenges from the Lincoln Park Junior Rowing Club out of Chicago, IL. Though the Dogwood is the official state championship for Tennessee, teams from 10 states were in attendance, with over 400 boats competing over the course of the day. The Varsity 8 race saw McCallie jump out to an early lead, only to surrender that lead in the third 500 meters. Thanks to a final sprint in the last minute of the race, though, McCallie was able to claim a 1.48 second victory and place first out of the 6 boats that made the final (14 entered the race, but many were eliminated in morning heats).
The Second Varsity 8 race unfolded in a similar pattern, with even closer margins. McCallie and Lincoln Park battled down the course with Lincoln Park holding the lead heading into the final sprint. Again, McCallie’s last push proved enough, as the Blue Tornado 8 crossed the line 0.8 seconds in front of the crew from Chicago.
With victories in the Men’s Varsity 8, Men’s Second Varsity 8, Men’s Second Varsity 4, and a second place finish in the Men’s Novice 8 to a non-Southeastern crew, McCallie will be the top seed from the SE North Region (TN, GA, NC, SC, AL) heading into the USRowing Southeast Regional Championships in Gainesville, GA on May 14-15.
McCallie will return to action this Wednesday in downtown Chattanooga against Baylor School at 4 PM in the 19th running of the Raoul Cup.
