History Net Courtesy of the National Historical Society, this site offers a varied selection of articles as well as a searchable database.

National Archives and Records Administration A wealth of curriculum related information in 'Just for Kids'. Current exhibits include: When Nixon Met Elvis, Portrait of Black Chicago, Posters from World War II, Presidential Gifts, American Originals (famous documents), and A New Deal for the Arts. Also includes their The Digital Classroom - instructional materials, methods for teaching primary sources, and sample lesson plans.

POTUS: Presidents of the United States Developed by the Internet Public Library; includes biographies, historical documents, audio and video files, speeches and writings, election results, odd facts and presidency highlights.

Library of Congress American Memory Collection A vast collection of primary source materials relating to the history and cultural developments of the United States. Includes documents, films, manuscripts, photographs, and sound recordings that tell the story of American history.

 

Documents

Core Documents of U.S. Democracy From the Government Printing Office, Core Documents provides a basic electronic depository collection that provides direct online access to the essential documents that define our democratic society. Topics include Legislation, Public Law, Regulations, Office of the President, Demographics, and Economy.

AmDocs: Documents for the Study of American History  This site provides access to nearly 500 full-text documents relating to the American experience from the 15th to the 20th century.

Historical Text Archive (University of Mississippi) Includes a vast historical document collection arranged chronologically as well as topically with links to sites relating to American history.

A Chronology of US Historical Documents Includes all the Presidential inaugural addresses, key speeches, documents and treaties.

Documents in the News "Identifies issues about government making news headlines" and provided background information through pertinent documents.

Documenting the American South - University of North Carolina site providing access to 20th century Southern literature and history.

Multi-Cultural Resources

American Slave Narratives from UVA, this site reproduces WPA interviews with former slaves. Includes audio clips.

African-American Women On-line Archival Collections Duke University manuscripts have been scanned and placed on line to give an unparalleled look at African-American life during and after slavery.

Africans in America Tie-in to the PBS series of the same title.

 

United States Government

Bureau of the Census   This rich site provides data about the people and economy of the United States and produces a wide variety of statistical products including the:

Statistical Abstract of the United States

US Historical Census Data Browser, 1790-1970 From Harvard, this is a searchable database of historical, social, economic, and demographic data from the Decennial Census of the U.S., from 1790 to 1860. Includes interesting information about the historical background of the census.

Government Printing Office/ Superintendent of Documents Includes online searchable databases of government publication available full-text at no charge via the Internet. Includes The Federal Register, The Congressional Record, Supreme Court Decisions, 1937-1975 and many more publications such as the U.S. Budget.

National Park Service - look here to find individual national parks; visit park museums; find science and nature information via "Nature Net."

U.S. Federal Interagency Council A comprehensive database that offers researchers statistical information compiled by more than 70 agencies of the government. Searchable by agency, program, subject or keyword.

Thomas : Legislative Information on the Internet Provided by the Library of Congress, Thomas provides a searchable index to the Congressional Record. It also includes the full text of all bills submitted to the current and previous sessions of Congress.

Supreme Court Documents The Legal Information Institute offers Supreme Court opinions under the auspices of Project Hermes, the court's electronic-dissemination project. This archive contains (or will soon contain) all opinions of the court issued since May of 1990.

US Supreme Court + Database This site is devoted to making the 6,700 opinions of the United States Supreme Court accessible to the general public. Features a "classic case of the week" from historic archives as well as current cases, arguments and session calendar.

American Civil War Homepage An extensive gathering of hyperlinks. Covers all aspects of the Civil War.

Civil War Center (Louisiana State University) This site has indexed over 2100 Civil War related links. The mission is "To locate, index, and / or make available all appropriate private and public data regarding the Civil War."

Selected Civil War Photographs From the Library of Congress, this site includes more than 1,000 photographs made under the supervision of Mathew B. Brady, and include scenes of military personnel, preparations for battle, and battle after-effects.

The Valley of the Shadow: Two Communities in the American Civil War - Site from the University of Virginia which tells the story of the Civil War as seen by the people in two communities.
