Welcome to McCALLIE CREW |
|
"Rowing is more than a fast boat on race day. It's a complementary experience to a young man's intellectual development.. Rowing, like success, is a journey, not a destination. I tell my oarsmen to have fun, learn and, most of all, grow as individuals. The wins, the losses will take care of themselves." -Rick Clother, USNA has information for new rowers; coxies also read the Coxswains' Guide. You can find information for all regatta venues at: REGATTA INFORMATION (Fall 2005 regatta schedule has been updated as of 8/11/05.) NEWS & INFO: February 1, 2006 - The schedule is more-or-less set for Spring 2006: Feb. 14 – First day of Spring Season
January 28, 2006 - Congratulations to the rowers who participated in the Tennessee Indoor Rowing Championships!
October 24, 2005 -
Coach "Doc" Swanson's report:
On Saturday McCallie's Crew entered the Head of the Tennessee Regatta in
Knoxville for the fifteenth consecutive year. The drama began even
before the team left school when the contract bus and driver didn't
appear, but some quick thinking by Abbie Roberts, Bill Payne, and Chris
Richardson saved the day. Once the whole team arrived McCallie rowed
well winning all four events* that we entered. Racing conditions were
cool with a slight head wind, but that didn't stop our 1st Varsity 4+
from winning the 5,000 meter race by over two minutes; in fact they were
docking before the next boat crossed the finish line Our 2nd Varsity 4+
finished second. McCallie has only one Novice 8 this fall. In fact we
have only eight novice rowers and one coxswain while a top rivals are
boating three eights on novices. Be that as it may the McCallie Novice 8
won handily. The Varsity Lightweight 8 had the most exciting finish of
the day. The boat was sprinting toward the finish right in front of the
McCallie fans. Then it veered off course to port when much to my
surprise the coxswain, Matt Mildenberg called, "Starboards weigh
enough" and one side of the boat stopped rowing for a couple of
strokes while the other side continued to pull. This corrected the
boat's course enough for all eight to row the last strokes through the
finish line to win gold medals. It turned out that their rudder was
fouled by weeds and wasn't working. Matt's call and the crew's response
was certainly remarkable. In our last race of the day the Varsity
Heavy** 8 won by a narrow margin probably because four of the crew
had raced earlier. Four races, four golds seems to me to be a good days
work.

October 10, 2005 - McCallie raced in Chattanooga this weekend, winning the Varsity 8+ event. The Varsity boat rowed the course with the third fastest time in the entire regatta (including college/open events). The Varsity 4+'s finished 2nd and 3rd in their event. Novice boats came away with gold medals in the 8+ and the 4+. Many thanks to the parents who worked the tent! October 1, 2005 - McCallie's Crew opened our fall season in Oak Ridge against teams from North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and most importantly the Cincinnati Juniors who are year in and year out the best junior team in the country. Directions from McCallie School to the UTC/McCallie barges:
From the main gate, take a right onto Dodds Avenue. Get in the
left lane; turn left at the light (onto McCallie Avenue). Follow
McCallie avenue toward downtown Chattanooga. Take a right on
Palmetto, then a left on East 5th Street. After the speed bumps,
follow 5th street as it bears right (the arena will be on your left).
Go straight through 2 lights (the road is now called Mabel Street) and
under the overpass. At the stop sign, go straight and then bear right
immediately - there are a few parking spaces along the riverwalk (more
parking is available on the nearby residential streets). Walk past
the Tennis Center parking lot (on your left) and the Scrappy Moore
football field (on your right) and you will see the UTC/McCallie barges.
September 19, 2004 - McCallie rowers (some for the second time in three years) witnessed the flooding of the Tennessee River: Ivan dumped nearly a foot of rain in the Tennessee valley last week. The barges will probably be inaccessible until midweek; luckily, the ergs were safe on high ground on campus! August 16, 2004 - McCallie rowers have been spotted on campus already! Returning rowers and potential Crew athletes should meet by the ergs on Tuesday, August 24 for a brief meeting. The coaching staff is pleased to introduce Bill Payne, who will work with Novices this fall. Please welcome Coach Payne! For those of you who are planning your calendars, please visit the tentative 2004-2005 schedule. August 15, 2004 - Former McCallie Coach Dan Beery makes the Olympic Final! Rowing 6 seat in the Men's Eight, Dan Beery will compete again on Sunday, August 22. See the IndyStar article here.

We will never be the best we can be until we work as hard as we can and push ourselves to a limit we create every single day." -- Excerpt from the book "Perfect Balance" by Aquil Abdullah.
